Hue was the capital of Vietnam and seat of the Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 until 1945, when the last Nguyen Emperor abdicated the throne. Our first stop in Hue was the Imperial City, which was consciously modeled on the Forbidden City in Beijing. Visitors approaching the Citadel first glimpse a tall flag pole flying the Vietnamese flag.
Then they enter through a gate resembling the Tiananmen gate in Beijing.
Our guide explained that the area inside the Citadel is characterized by geometric symmetry and harmonious design elements. It was certainly one of the most peaceful places we’ve been in Vietnam.
